Item # I-30634-25 3401 Canal Street (homicide) 9/30/25 5:01 pm; This incident appears to be completely random; the perpetrator was observed by a passerby beating on the window of an unoccupied parked van, with gun in hand on Bienville Street. The perpetrator then immediately began firing at that passing vehicle, from that point the perpetrator proceeded on foot to the location, 3401 Canal Street, where he encountered the homicide victim who was standing near his vehicle. The perpetrator shot the victim, proceeded to take the victim’s vehicle, flee in the vehicle eventually entering Jefferson Parish. Apparently, the perpetrator then took the handgun in his possession and shot himself in the head, being located shortly after the homicide at I-10 W and Bonnabel by NOPD officers. The scene showed no evidence of a second involved perpetrator or accessory.
The perpetrator did die at the hospital following his self-inflicted gunshot wound days later. It appears a mental health crisis may have been the major factor that precipitated the perpetrator’s crime. There could be some additional important facts I learn from Homicide later, but this is what’s known now. Mid-City Security District Offices were first on scene, along with the on-duty Allied Security Officer.
